Mumbai's weather leaves you craving for fresh juices most of the time. Sip through the specials at these stalls and tank up in plenty.
How about a tall glass of cool sugarcane juice after your lunch? If you are anywhere near Gateway of India, head to Varanasi Sugarcane Juice, one of the popular thirst quenchers of Mumbai. Watch the sugarcane sticks pass through the huge stainless-steel crusher as it squeezes out the fresh drink, instantly gulped down by tourists, office goers and residents alike.
The 400ml regular glass is priced at Rs 12* (without ice) and Rs 10 (with ice). The “Sagar” glass of 600 ml comes at a price of Rs 18 (minus the ice). There is a two-rupee discount for all students and defence personnel.
Bachelorr's at Marine Drive is also a good place to be at on a hot sultry day. Try the papaya strawberry smoothie or the kalakhatta soda to perk you up. The freshly-squeezed orange juice with masala and crushed ice easily beats any pre-packaged coolant you may pick off the shelf in a supermart. Worth sampling as well are the pomegranate juice and the sweet-lime concoction.
For the calorie conscious there is HAS, at the foothills of Pali Hill, that stirs up some wheatgrass and lemon shots and low-fat juices. Slurpworthy liquids include fresh juices in chickoo, apple, banana, low-fat milk and yogurt. They even have a hangover relief: a fusion of carrot, apple, orange, ginger and celery.
The Haji Ali Juice Centre is a virtual landmark in mid-town Mumbai. In juices, you must try the Ganga Jamuna, a delicious fusion of orange and sweet lime, served in a giant beer glass. The watermelon juice, with the masala and chunks of the fruit nestling at the bottom of the glass, is yet another delectable thirst buster.
Makes staying off the colas simply worth it.
