Celebrate Chinese New Year 2012 in Bangalore
As most of us are getting ready for Ugadi/Gudi Padwa, our Chinese counterparts are celebrating their most important festivity of the year, The Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year 2012. This festival falls in between the month of January and February depending on the solar and lunar movements and is celebrated with much gusto over a span of 15 days which ends with a Lantern Festival. In Chinese calendar each year symbolises to an animal which is Year of Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. On Jan 23 2012, Chinese across the world will celebrate the year of Dragon symbolising strength, vitality and leadership.
During the festive time, the whole town is painted red. Traditionally all Chinese homes are decorated with red paper banners, lanterns which have auspicious sayings to bring goodluck and prosperity. People wear red from top to toe, as it is believed that red is the colour that wards off evil spirits and brings in good fortune. The whole family gets-together and offers obeisances and prayers to Gods and ancestors. This is followed by feasting on different variety of food and delicacies like Dumplings, Springrolls, Lion's Head Meatballs, Peking Duck, Sweet and Sour Pork, Bak Kwa (Barbequed Pork), Fish, Noodles and a variety of desserts. Mandarin Oranges and Tangerines are placed at the entrance and inside the houses as a sign of prosperity and happiness. Some of the scrumptious traditional dishes are cooked and feasted upon with family, referred as Reunion Dinner. In recent years families organise Re-union dinner's at posh restaurants. The feasting ends with families gathering to play cards, mahjong and gambling with friendly stakes and merry-making.
One fo the most integral part of any festival is exchanging of gifts and Chinese New Year treasures the tradition of gifting. Red packets, also known as Hong Bao are distributed to children and unmarried adults. Married couples and other senior members in the family also give away red packets. The envelopes usually contain money, but people also exchange gift vouchers, gold, silver and alike. Sharing mandarin oranges, Bak Kwa (Barbequed pork) and flavoured love letters(snacks) is also a custom followed by many Chinese.
Lion and Dragon dances are also a common sight during Chinese New Year. Dance groups are invited to homes and businesses for a lion or dragon dance performance. It is believed is that the loud beats of the drums and the sound of cymbals removes bad spirits and ushers prosperity and opulence. People burst firecrackers to mark the beginning of the New Year.
The 15 day celebrations end with the Lantern festival. People make their own lanterns and gather in a common place under the full moon giving a festive atmosphere. Wish your eastern friends Xing Nian Kwai Le and Gong Xi Fa Cai Wish you Happy New Year which translates to and I wish you be prosperous respectively.
